Dear Parent(s)/Guardian(s) of CMSD:

As we move forward into the 21st Century, technology continues to become more and more part of our society. Children are now termed “technology natives” and parents and educators as “technology immigrants.” Our children have grown up with a mouse in their hand and hard-wired to quickly adapt to new technologies.

At Canonsburg Middle School, we started a mission to provides students and parents with the tools necessary to stay safe while online. However, our mission has gone beyond internet safety with a more well-rounded focus on digital citizenship. At Canonsburg Middle School, we provide course work to prepare students in the the area of digital citizenship which is using technology appropriately and safely. Topics such as cyberbullying, internet safety, and appropriate use of technologies including mass communication tools.

As parents, it is our responsibility to teach children how to wield such powerful tools as the Internet. The Internet is filled with wonderful educational material that children of all ages can benefit. However, it is also filled with inappropriate content, sexual predators, drug promotion, etc. It is this reason that you are obligated to monitor your children while online in order to ensure they are using it in a smart and safe manner. We have found that many of our students are giving out personal information about themselves to strangers on the Internet.

At Canon-McMillan, we want to help you in that mission by providing key information and educational opportunities to the students and parents throughout the school year. The purpose of the digital citizenship 101 blog is to provide information and resources to you.

Sincerely,

Dr. Greg Taranto
